Virdapt Forward Deployed Engineering

Most enterprise AI dies between the demo and production.

A forward-deployed engineer is the person who gets it across. They sit inside your team, find where AI actually creates value, build it, ship it into production, and leave your people able to run it.

What a forward-deployed engineer is

An FDE embeds in your organisation and owns an outcome end to end. That means the same person does all of this:

  1. Understands the operation. Sits with the people doing the work and learns how it really runs, not how the process document says it runs.
  2. Finds the solvable problem. Most AI projects fail because the wrong problem was chosen. Picking the right one is the highest-value hour of the engagement.
  3. Designs an approach that survives contact with reality. Within your data, your latency budget, your compliance constraints, your existing systems.
  4. Builds it. Working software, in your repo, reviewed by your engineers.
  5. Ships it to production. Including the unglamorous parts: evaluation, monitoring, failure handling, rollback, and the change management that gets people to actually use it.
  6. Transfers the capability. Your team can extend and operate it after we leave. That is the point.

The defining trait is ownership, not seniority. An FDE is accountable for whether the thing works in your business, not for delivering a deliverable.

How this differs from what you have probably bought before

ModelWhat they doWhere it stops
Staff augmentationAdds capacity for work you have already definedSomeone still has to define the work and own whether it lands
ConsultantsAssess, recommend, produce a strategyThe recommendation arrives; production does not
Systems integratorsImplement a defined scope against a defined planScope is fixed before anyone knows what will actually work
Hiring in-housePermanent capability, fully yoursMonths to hire, and the first hire has no method to follow
Forward-deployed engineeringFinds the problem, builds it, ships it, hands it over—

Why this role exists now

Capability outran organisations

The models became genuinely useful before most companies had anyone who could work out where to point them.

Teams got leaner

The operating model going forward is a smaller group working with AI, not a larger group working without it. Value shifts from headcount to the people who make the combination work.

Production is the whole problem

A demo takes a weekend. Evaluation, monitoring, integration, adoption and trust take months, and most organisations have nobody whose job that is.

When you need one

  • You have an AI prototype that has not reached production, and nobody can quite say why.
  • You know AI should help somewhere in your operation but cannot say where, specifically.
  • Your engineers are strong but have never shipped an AI system into production and are learning on your most important project.
  • You have bought AI consulting before and received a deck.

You probably do not need one if you have a clearly defined build with a clear spec and just need hands. That is our EOR track, and it is cheaper.

Two ways to get FDE capability

Deploy ours. We put Virdapt FDEs into your engagement. Fastest route, and the right one when the work is urgent or the first project needs to succeed visibly.
FDE supply →

Build your own. We train your existing engineers into the role, through a structured cohort. Slower, cheaper per head, and permanent.
FDE training →

Most clients do both, in that order. The combined offering →

Bring us the project that stalled.

A 30-minute call, no deck. We will tell you whether it is a problem an FDE can solve, and if it is not, we will say so.
